I must have been listening to this song a dozen of times before, but I guess I never really focused on its lyrics. Yesterday night, I did listen. In fact, I was dancing on it. And - while doing so - I was intrigued by two words that stood out from the rest of the lyrics...
SHADOW
PEOPLE
Did I hear it well? Did they actually sing of 'shadow people'? Yes, I did. Yes, they did. Awesome!
If you have been following me for a while and aren't stumbling on this post by coincidence, you might be smiling right now. You will grasp what I'm talking about. I have posted 17 times, in the last two months or so, about Shadow People. Tunnels of the Shadow People to be precise. A film project that I'm working on.
I just wanted to share this feeling with you. When it seems like everything is lining up. When it almost feels like a song has been written for you. Alright, I'm exaggerating a little now but it felt pretty special yesterday.
This band, The Midnight, is one of my favorite bands in the so called Neo Noir / Synthwave / Retro New Wave genre. It's a genre known for music that seems to go back in time 25 or 30 years. It reminds me of video tapes, music on record players and other kind of feel good nostalgia ( I know that it's a paradox ). That far back in time, I was into other stuff ( being born in 1981 ), but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it now.
Listening to these kind of tunes usually energizes me and - who knows - it might do the same to you.
I added the lyrics to this song at the end of this post. I'm not gonna try to explain or understand them.
If you feel like doing so, or have any theories about shadow people, feel free to share them in a comment to this post.
The song is called vampires and - although vampires aren't reflected in mirrors - they usually have shadows. Pretty cool ones usually.
Fun Fact: Today, Ted, my filmmaking friend and collaborator on Tunnels o/t Shadow People, showed me ( over Skype ) what the shadow people in our project are going to look like. He is doing the editing and SFX. It looked awesome and I told him that! We're gonna show the world that you can make a great production on no budget. You just need a good story and a passionate team of people who wanna put in the time, blood, sweat and tears.
Without further ado, I present to you, 'Vampires' by The Midnight:
Lyrics:
Strangers in a dark room
Laughing at jokes they didn't quite hear
Frosted window panes and cheap champagne
A face appears
And anything could happen
In these cathedrals we roam
Where shadow people dance
And trade their glance
And walk home alone
Staring out the window
Of the Roosevelt Hotel
Watching Midtown empty out
And I kiss her farewell
They say we come from nothing
And to nothing we'll return
And in between is gravity
And bridges left to burn
