Lately, I have been thinking of sharing some stories of my filmmaking past, but it didn't feel right and I preferred to focus on writing on (other people's) movies for the time being. But, as I recently decided to get back to filmmaking again and make Documentaries on fellow Steemians, I felt this might be the right time to start sharing my movie making past with you.

More than a movie guy

Most people know me as a 'movie guy' on here, as someone who has seen loads of movies and loves to talk about film. This is pretty logical. After all, most of my posts are focused on films I've seen. What some of you don't know, is that I am a filmmaker too.

There's no doubt that most filmmakers are huge film fans - or in certain cases slightly disappointed in the current movie output - but the opposite isn't necessarily the case. Not every film lover is a filmmaker too.

Both of the above statements held true for me. I loved film and was disappointed in the Dutch film industry, as well as most of the blockbusters that Hollywood pooped out.

I loved film as an art form and storytelling device, though. And the film that made me fall in love with cinema was probably David Lynch's 1986 Blue Velvet. As I mentioned in my earlier writing: Movie Recommendation - Blue Velvet

When the movie was finished and the lights switched on again, I was a different person. From that moment onwards, I knew that movies could be more than just enjoyable, entertaining or exciting. It was possible to actually fall in love with them.

It was Blue Velvet that made me decide I wanted to become a filmmaker myself. If it was possible to make movies like these, there was definitely hope for a somewhat crazy and often misunderstood creative like me. It still took me almost a decade - besides some half baked attempts - before I really started on my filmmaking mission.

This screening of Blue Velvet took place a year or two before I actually started making my first (short film). Before trying my hands on filmmaking, I devoured 1000s of films and read at least a handful of books on filmmaking.

In the follow up to this post, I will zoom out on the picture on top and tell you what movie I was involved in there.

P.S.
A couple of days ago, I found a shoebox filled with screenplays of films I made, didn't make and might make one day. The box is labeled "someday maybe". The discovery of these relics might be some kind of sign that I should start sharing some stories on this past.
