and Back to Filmmaking - Part 2
This afternoon, I had another talk with my filmmaking buddy, Ted.
We continued talking about the project that he has been working on ( solo ) for many months now. A project that he shared with me - partially ( over Skype ) - but I kind of stayed out of, up till recently. I had other things to focus on, and my creative gearbox couldn't get into filmmaking gear.
Lately, I started realizing more and more, that I want to be part of this. I need this creative outlet in my life. It's one of the things that I should focus on. It's a part of me that shouldn't be ignored. In fact, if I ignore this intrinsic part of my being for too long a time, I become depressed.
I should be careful that I don't overstep it though. That I don't get too hyped about it, making things bigger than they are, setting impossible goals and setting the expectation bar at Olympic heights. I talked about this with Ted thoroughly. He and I have gone through so many projects, highs and lows over the years, that we really know each others weaknesses as well as our own, as goes for our strengths.
Building Momentum
So, I am slowly building momentum towards taking a more active part in this project. Ted will still do most of the work ( story, camera, editing and even acting ) but I will start acting in this too and will do some filming myself ( we're in different locations - Portugal and North Carolina ), as well as brainstorming along with him. He will share the project on Twitter and YouTube and I will be sharing it with you all on Steemit.
Interactive Filmmaking
In fact, I plan to do way more than just share this with you. I want you to be part of it.
The goal is to make this an interactive project, where the audience has a saying over the direction that the project/ story takes. This is something that I have been trying to set up with Ted since the start of our collab, back in 2013. But, back then, we didn't have access to ( a platform like ) Steemit.
If you are curious about our earlier attempts on interactive filmmaking, here's some links to:
- The Haunted Woods of Terror ( 2013 ) We didn't make it past a teaser trailer. due to our main actresses bailing out and my teaching job and a freelance filmmaking gig that was sucking my creativity dry.
- Hidden Humanoids ( 2015 - 16 ): a mockumentary about a guy in his thirties who believes in small hidden creatures. This project was cancelled after 6 episodes due to lack of ( audience ) interaction and our actors not being (pro-)active enough. The waiting is the hardest part ;>)
Funnily enough, it was an interactive film project ( 5 day serial ), back in 2013, that I set up, that got me into touch with Theodore. It was exactly the interactive filmmaking part - probably that mixed with my no budget improv style - that made him decide to reach out to me.
He asked me if I would be up to turning ( some of ) his stories into film. It's now 5 years later and we worked on a bunch of short projects and tried our hands on two feature films. It wasn't always easy ( to say the least ) but we also had loads of fun. We keep being drawn towards each other creatively and energetically.
Now - after a pause in our filmmaking collab of nearly a year - we are getting back to what we started out with. Having fun and actually interacting with our audience.
